Nelson Mandela said “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart”.
As Frank Smith, I have always strongly believed that “one language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way”.
My name is Ana. I am from Seville (Spain) and I am currently living in London. Learning languages is my life since I was a child. First, English, then French and later, German and Italian.
In my opinion, through learning a language, you subconsciously pick up different perspectives and they give you new ways of looking at the world and your surroundings, making you more open minded and willing to accept the views of others.
I always loved learning languages, new cultures, travelling, but since I started teaching Spanish, I realised what I like the most is being able to show people from other countries how wonderful is my language and how varied is the culture of Spanish speaking countries.
I find the language learning/teaching process amazing and really gratifying. I know how important is to have a good teacher, it can change your life. It, actually, changed mine. When I was 15, my French teacher suggested to me to spend the summer in France. My family didn´t like the idea and to be honest, I was very scared. Not only it was the best summer I have ever had, but also I did the same the following summer. I stayed with a nice French family and that´s where I learnt the importance of be immersed in the culture, in the language, in the country.
I will never forget how speaking their language made me feel part of the family! Years later, I moved to Strasbourg for an academic year at University and I went to visit them, she could still remember that I loved the “pain au chocolat” for breakfast. I will be eternally grateful to that teacher.
ACADEMIC BACKGROUND & TEACHING EXPERIENCE:
It will come as no surprise that I ended up studying English and French Translation and Interpreting. However, in the last year, instead of choosing a translation company for my academic internship, I opted for teaching Spanish in CLIC International House, a language school in Seville. Although it wasn´t the professional possibility I expected when I enrolled on that degree, I found out that it was what I really wanted to do!
That was probably the reason why I did the Master in Language Teaching. When I arrived in London, I saw the opportunity to get my QTS and I didn’t hesitate for a second.
I am currently working as a teacher for a language school in London. I also teach Spanish and French to children in London nurseries. And now, I would like just to broaden my horizons!
Regarding the UK National Curriculum, I would like to mention that I have been doing supply teaching for different schools in London, assisting them and invigilating GCSE exams. For this reason, I am more than familiar with this kind of exams and with their requirements and contents.
So… Don´t hesitate it! If you would like to discover Spanish language, if you would like to travel to ANY of the 20 countries with Spanish as official language all over the world and, as it happened to me once, become part of their culture and as Nelson Mandela said “speak directly to people´s hearts”, let´s learn together!
