Sobre Kajetan
My name is Kajetan, though everyone calls me Kaj. Polish is my first language. I spent two years in Barcelona and now live in Madrid, where I am reading Financial Markets and Data Analysis at CEU San Pablo.
Teaching Polish in Spain turns out to be interesting, because the two languages fail in opposite directions. Spanish speakers arrive with good instincts for verb conjugation and are then hit by the case system, which Spanish simply does not have. English speakers arrive with the opposite problem. Knowing all three languages means I can usually tell in advance which wall a student is about to hit, and go round it rather than into it.
I also know what it is like from the other side. I have learned Spanish as an adult in a city where everyone speaks it faster than I can process, so I have a fairly recent memory of what it feels like to have a sentence ready and not get it out in time. I do not rush people.
I teach in Polish, English and Spanish, and I am patient with the questions people think are stupid, which are usually the ones worth asking.

Polish is my first language, and I teach it in Madrid to people starting from nothing as well as to people who grew up hearing it at home and never learned to use it properly.
Polish has a reputation for being impossible. It is not impossible, but it is front-loaded: seven cases, perfective and imperfective verbs, and a spelling system that looks alarming and is actually completely regular once someone shows you the pattern. Most people give up in the first two months because they are taught the whole case table at once. We do not do that.
WHO I TEACH:
Complete beginners. We start with the handful of structures that let you say real things in week one, and bring in cases gradually, one function at a time, in the order you actually need them.
Heritage speakers. You understand your grandparents perfectly and freeze when you have to answer. This is a different problem from beginner Polish and needs different lessons: we work on production, on the grammar you absorbed but never had explained, and on writing, which is usually the weakest part.
People with Polish family or partners. Very specific goal, very specific vocabulary. We can build the course around the conversations you actually need to survive at Christmas.
Anyone moving to Poland for work or study, including help with paperwork vocabulary, which nobody teaches and everybody needs.
HOW I WORK: lots of speaking from the first session, because Polish pronunciation is regular and the sooner you stop being frightened of it the faster everything else goes. Grammar explained in English, Spanish or Polish, whichever gets the idea across quickest. Materials provided, no textbook to buy.
