Sobre Gabby

I have been teaching English for 20 years using my own private-lesson method, which focuses on practicing real-life situations. During this time, I have identified some common mistakes typically made by Spanish-speaking students, such as translating phrases literally and being unfamiliar with English-specific structures.
To help my students overcome these difficulties, I encourage them to study complete sentences rather than individual words and to study actively rather than passively. This means that instead of simply learning grammatical rules, they need to learn how to apply grammar in different contexts.

Most of my students come to me with the same problem: they feel frustrated because they are unable to express themselves in everyday situations. In order to improve their conversational skills and achieve greater fluency, it is essential for students to stop translating from Spanish into English.

Sometimes, however, this is not easy. Words and phrases do not come to mind quickly enough, and speech does not flow as naturally as they would like, especially when there is no time to think.

In my classes, I use a wide variety of activities designed to help students develop their command of morphosyntactic structures, fixed and idiomatic expressions, and specific vocabulary related to areas such as healthcare, education, art, and many others.

There is an English saying: “Repetition is the mother of all skill.” It is a very true saying, and my students can certainly confirm this. Through repetition-based exercises (drilling activities), my students have been able to internalize the language more effectively and leave behind the translation-based approach, which has never been productive.

I’m a native English teacher and have been teaching English in Spain for almost 20 years. Over that time, I’ve worked with students from different backgrounds and with different goals, always focusing on helping them use English confidently and naturally in real communication.
Learning English is much more effective when you have something interesting and useful to talk about. That is why my classes are built around specific topics and situations, with the relevant vocabulary and expressions introduced before we start speaking. Rather than studying isolated words or grammar exercises, we first build the language you need and then put it into practice through constant interaction and conversation.
Topics can range from everyday situations such as shopping, renting a car in the US, making small talk, asking for information, giving advice, making appointments or dealing with everyday problems, to more advanced subjects such as healthcare in the US versus Spain, social problems in Spain versus the US, immigration and integration, the impact of social media on society, education and the workplace, or the differences between Spanish and American lifestyles. The objective is always the same: acquire useful vocabulary and then actually use it, question it, discuss it and make it your own.
I also offer Business English, drawing on my background as an economist. Classes can focus on topics such as the economy and current economic trends, inflation and interest rates, financial markets and investment, international trade and globalization, business strategy, entrepreneurship, or the world of work and employment. This allows students not only to improve their general fluency, but also to develop the vocabulary and confidence they need to participate in meetings, presentations, negotiations and professional conversations.
One of the most important parts of my methodology is the introduction of topic-specific vocabulary before the conversation begins. For example, if we are talking about business performance, we might first work with expressions such as meet a target, boost sales, cut costs, increase revenue, launch a product, enter a new market, or face strong competition. We might also look at useful phrasal verbs such as carry out an analysis, set up a company, take over a business, deal with a problem, or bring up an issue. Once the language is on the table, we use it in questions, role-plays and discussion: Why might a company want to cut costs? What could help a business boost sales? What happens when a company enters a new market? This way, vocabulary is not something you simply memorize—it becomes language you actually use.
Conversation is always at the heart of my classes. I encourage students to ask plenty of questions because, interestingly, forming questions in English can sometimes be more challenging for Spanish speakers than it initially appears. Students therefore have constant opportunities not only to answer questions, but to formulate their own, react to what I say, challenge ideas, express opinions, explain their reasoning and keep a conversation going.
And English is not about textbooks. TV shows and movies are an excellent source of real, engaging language. My students particularly enjoy talking about their favorite series and films, discussing characters, plots, opinions and predictions. I encourage them to watch films and series in the original version, so that they gradually become accustomed to the musicality of English, natural intonation, pronunciation, connected speech and the enormous variety of accents they will encounter in the real world.
The goal is not simply to “study English.” It is to use English confidently, naturally and spontaneously—to talk about the things that interest you, deal with real-life situations and express your ideas with increasing precision and ease.
If you want to improve your English by actually speaking it, let's talk.
