Auxiliario modal shall

'Shall' es un auxiliar modal. Tiene varios usos (formar futuro, sugerencias, dar órdenes…) que veremos detalladamente más adelante.

Como verbo auxiliar comparte las características de los modales:

- Va seguido de un verbo en infinitivo sin "to", excepto be able to, need to, have to y ought to.

- La tercera persona del singular no lleva -s en el presente simple.

- No necesita añadir el auxiliar do/does para la forma interrogativa y negativa.

- No tiene tiempos compuestos ni progresivos.

- No tiene infinitivo.

Usos de "shall"

1 'Shall' se usa como auxiliar en la formación del futuro para la primera persona del singular y del plural, aunque la tendencia hoy en día es a usar "will" para todas las personas. En inglés americano normalmente no se usa "shall". La forma corta de 'will' y 'shall' es -'ll.

I shall arrive next week.

Llegaré la semana que viene.

We'll be there by 8.00.

Estaré allí para las 8.00.

2 Puede utilizarse para hacer sugerencias u ofrecimientos en las oraciones interrogativas, sobre todo en la primera persona del singular y plural. Se traduce en español por un presente o, a veces, por 'deber'.

Shall we go to the cinema?

¿Vamos al cine?.

Shall I go with you?

¿Debo ir contigo?

3 Para promesas, órdenes, amenazas o sentido de inevitabilidad. Se puede usar en segunda y tercera persona, aunque su uso es poco frecuente.

I shall give you a bycicle for your birthday.

Te daré una bicicleta por tu cumpleaños (promesa).

You shall do as you are told.

Harás lo que se te diga (orden).

She shall regret this.

Lo lamentará (es inevitable).

4 Para expresar obligación en documentos legales, anuncios oficiales...

The hirer shall be responsible for the maintenance of the contracted vehicle.

El arrendatario será responsable del mantenimiento del vehículo contratado.
