El subjunctive mood o modo subjuntivo es una forma verbal en inglés que se utiliza para expresar deseos, dudas o situaciones hipotéticas. A diferencia del modo indicativo, que expresa hechos o certezas, el subjuntivo se usa para comunicar situaciones que no son seguras o que no han ocurrido.
Como se ven en los condicionales por ejemplo, el subjuntivo se usa en oraciones en donde queremos decir algo que por el momento no es realidad aunque hay veces que nunca podrían ser realidad como en la común frase "if I were you" (si yo fuera tu) ya que eso nunca sería real.
Hay varios contextos comunes en los cuales usamos el subjunctive mood y ahora te enseñamos a identificarlo y formularlo. Primero veamos en los tiempos verbales en los cuales usamos este modo.
Tiempos verbales
Es muy fácil congujar este modo. Tenemos presente y para todos los sujetos se usa la misma fórmula y lo mismo pasa con el pasado.
PRESENTE
Se forma usando la forma base del verbo (infinitivo sin "to") para todas las personas, sin importar el sujeto.
Sujeto + verbo en forma base

- It is important that he be on time.
- I suggest that she study more.
- They demanded that the company pay the fees.
- It is essential that we stay focused.
- The teacher recommended that the student read more books.
PASADO
El pasado subjuntivo se usa principalmente con el verbo "to be", que se convierte en "were" para todos los sujetos.
Sujeto + were + complemento
Ejemplos:
- If I were you, I would apologize.
- She wishes she were more confident.
- If he were here, he would help us.
- They acted as if they were experts.
- I wish I knew the answer.
Usos
1. Recomendaciones y expectativas
El subjuntivo se usa después de verbos como "wish", "suggest", "recommend", "demand" o "insist" para expresar recomendaciones, sugerencias, o lo que se espera que alguien haga. Después de estos verbos, la forma de subjuntivo del verbo generalmente es la misma que la forma base (sin "to").
Ejemplos:
- I recommend that she be more careful.
- It is recommended that you arrive early for the meeting.
- The teacher insists that we study harder.
- She demands that we finish the project by Friday.
- I suggest that he read the instructions carefully.
2. Necesidad o Importancia
Cuando se habla de lo que es necesario o importante, también se puede utilizar el subjuntivo. En estos casos, se usan expresiones como "it is necessary", "it is important","it is essential", "it is vital" entre otras.
Ejemplos:
- It is crucial that they be honest with us.
- It’s important that she complete the report by the deadline.
- It’s vital that we stay focused during the presentation.
- It’s necessary that you pay attention to the details.
- It is essential that everyone know the safety protocols.
3. Situaciones Hipotéticas
El subjuntivo se usa en oraciones condicionales para hablar de situaciones imaginarias o poco probables y personalmente creo que es la que más se usa. Para más info en las oraciones condicionales veán estos artículos.
Ejemplos:
- If I were you, I would take the opportunity.
- If he had more experience, he would get the job.
- If we were better prepared, we could have avoided the delay.
- If they knew how to fix the problem, they would help.
- If she had studied more, she would have passed the exam.
