Reading in Daily Life

Read the short text below carefully. It is similar to something you might see in a real-life situation, such as an email, a flyer, or a message on campus. Then, answer the two questions that follow. This exercise will help you practice the "Reading in Daily Life" section of the TOEFL test. Make sure to read for both general understanding and specific details.

Emma (10:12 A.M.):
Hey, do you know if the study group is still meeting in the library today?

Noah (10:13 A.M.):
It was moved. Prof. Chen said the library’s reserved for an event, so we’re using Room 104 in the science building instead.

Emma (10:14 A.M.):
Thanks for the heads-up! Do you know what time we’re starting?

Noah (10:14 A.M.):
Still at 11:00. I’ll get there a bit early to grab a whiteboard.

Emma (10:15 A.M.):
Awesome. I’ll bring the notes I typed up from last week’s reading.

Noah (10:16 A.M.):
Perfect. See you there!

Why is the study group meeting in a different location?

Selecciona una respuesta.

Solución

Correct answer: The group decided to meet in the science building  (The library is reserved for an event).

Next, you will get one or more long “reading in daily life” tasks.  You’ll get 3 to 5 questions about each one. Here you have an example so you can practice:

Subject: Orientation Reminder – City Language Institute

Dear Ms. Lopez,

Thank you for registering for our English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course at the City Language Institute. We’re excited to welcome you to our learning community!

This is a reminder that your orientation session will take place this Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in Room 3B. During this session, you’ll receive your course schedule, student ID, and access credentials for the online learning platform. You’ll also meet your instructors and classmates.

Please bring a valid photo ID and a printed copy of your course registration confirmation. If you have not yet submitted your placement test, you may do so online before Thursday, or arrive 30 minutes early to complete it in person.

If you have any questions before the orientation, don’t hesitate to contact our office by email or phone.

Warm regards,
Stephanie Yoon
Admissions Coordinator
City Language Institute

What is the main purpose of the email?

Selecciona una respuesta.

Solución

To remind the recipient about an upcoming orientation is correct because the email clearly states: “This is a reminder that your orientation session will take place this Thursday…” showing that the main purpose is to remind Ms. Lopez about the orientation, not to provide payment info, confirm acceptance, or reschedule anything.

Next, you will get one or two “academic reading” passages.  These will look like short extracts from a book, magazine or website.  They will be 200 words long approx. Each will be followed by some questions (4-5).

Public transportation plays a critical role in the daily lives of millions of city residents. Buses, subways, and trams provide affordable travel options for those who may not own a car, and they help reduce traffic congestion by offering an alternative to private vehicles. In addition, mass transit systems reduce pollution by lowering the number of gas-powered cars on the road.

However, the value of public transportation goes beyond convenience and environmental impact.  It can also have powerful effects on economic mobility and quality of life. Studies show that people with access to reliable transit have more job opportunities and face fewer obstacles in accessing education and healthcare. Efficient transit systems also reduce commute times, allowing people to spend more time with their families and engage more actively in their communities.

Despite its importance, public transportation systems face many challenges. Aging infrastructure, lack of funding, and rising maintenance costs can reduce the reliability and efficiency of services. In many cities, budget cuts have led to reduced service hours or route eliminations, limiting access for the people who depend on transit the most. Climate change also poses threats, such as flooding and heatwaves that disrupt operations and damage equipment.

According to the passage, what is one way public transportation supports economic opportunity?

Selecciona una respuesta.

Solución

Correct answer: By connecting people with jobs and services
Explanation: The passage explains that public transit gives access to jobs, schools, and healthcare (key to economic opportunity).
